Books are a huge part of our day. From school reading, reading for pleasure and bedtimes stories, we have a huge collection of books that we have fallen in love with over the years.
We often read many of the same stories over and over, so much so that Hamish could recite the story to me. but I honestly love that there are so many authors who have paved the way for his love of reading.
So many books where the characters have come alive through a beautiful collaboration of text and illustrations, where he was taught a lesson, or when a book walked a journey with us.
Some of our current favourites are:
A Frog a whale and a princess tale by Tina Scotford
The land of Kachoo books by Tina Scotford
– The mighty elephant in the land of Kachoo
– The leopard and the bush baby in the land of Kachoo
– Lost in the land of Kachoo
– Saving the rhino in the land of Kachoo
The local artists published for Wimpy by Ethnikids
– Monkey and Crocodile
-How the elephant saved summer
– Nana Boselele
– How the owl got its hoot
Storybook Stars
Hamish’s personalised storybook from Storybook stars where he is the hero in the book.
This modern version of the classic story takes a new twist with a strong character who is both inventive, smart and able to stand up for herself as she escapes the witches tower.
I love the ending which sees this Rapunzel sporting a short hair cut, working as the palace inventor, becoming best friends with the prince and employing the evil witch.
A truly engaging and fun twist to this tale of the beautiful Rapunzel who is trapped in a tower from little .
With illustrations that capture the essence of the story, this book is a must on every little girls bookshelf.

Book number four in the feeling friends series is just as engaging and entertaining.
Beautifully illustrated by Megan Andrews.
Little Sofia the squirrel is climbing into bed when a strange noise scares her. She turns cold and sweaty and her heart is full of fear. She hides under the bed and covers her ears.
Eventually she gathers her courage and discovers that the scary noise is just a little mouse.
Together with the mouse she finds the power inside her to help her be brave when she doesn’t feel brave at all.
A lovely way to illustrate fear and anxiety to our little ones and equip them with coping tooils for when the world seems too big.

Themba is hot and bored and kicks a plastic bottle along the dusty road.
UKhozi the fish eagle sternly calls down to him to pick up his mess.
Themba had no intention of picking up the bottle and so iKhozi explains how the plastic bottle is going to end up in the ocean.
He tells Themba that the rubbish in the rivers, estuaries and sea hurt our wildlife, dirty the beaches and add harmful chemicals to the water.
UKhosi takes Themba to meet Nogwaja the hare who was helping a heron remove a plastic ring from his neck, and to see iNkalankala the crab who was picking up polstyrene balls under the mangrove trees.
At the sea they see some Eco-warriors cleaning the beach and meet uFundu the turtle.
Together these beautiful animals teach Themba why he shouldn’t litter.
This is a wonderfully illustrated story to teach young children the dangers to our enviornament that litter poses.
At the back of the book are some helpful recycling tips for mom and dad as well some mot6e information to explain some of the vocabulary.

This easy to take along workbook is full of fun home learning activities for children aged 3 to 5 years old.
Written by teaching experts, it supports a preschool / foundation phase curriculum and teaches key skills for English.
The pages contain a wide variety of activities to keep the children engaged and the instructions are clear and simple.
I especially like that the layout is uncluttered, making it perfect for young learnears who may get distracted by too much on a page.
Clear, uncluttered layout
The activity also provides answer sheets so as a parent you can check the activity was completed correctly.
We started working in this book this morning and Hamish thoroughly enjoyed the few activities he has done.
Because there is such a wide variety of activities, you can focus on those your child finds easy and move onto the harder pages as you work through the book.
💥It is important to note that South African children learn their alphabet much later than British children and so many of the phonetic and reading activities may only be introduced to them at school from 5 years old.
