Superbook presents “The First Christmas “at the V & A Waterfront and a Giveaway

As we turn the page to the last month of 2021 and begin to prepare our homes for the coming Advent season so do we as parents prepare our families’ hearts for the true reason behind the Christmas festivities.

Two years ago I was desperately searching for a way that Hamish could enjoy the magic of Christmas and somehow still know the true reason for the season. He was still really little and although we had read the story of the birth of Christ in his Bible book, he was unable to put the connection between the birth of Jesus and Christmas.

I then discovered that Superbook had a beautiful Christmas DVD combo consisting of 2 stories:

The first Christmas and The birth of John the Baptist

I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to help him see the Bible come to life as we watched the story of the First Christmas together. We have since watched this DVD several times and he has begun to understand that Christmas is so much more than just Santa, his elves, and gifts.

More than just a DVD

However, something else happened that first day that we met the Superbook team to receive the DVD. Superbook was no longer just another brand or a product we would cast on a shelf until we needed it. Superbook became real to Hamish as he asked for Gizmo, the cute robot mascot, and eagerly wanted to watch more movies.

Superbook became a safe App on my phone for Hamish to play games and watch Bibles stories. We followed their social media and used the crafts in our homeschool Bible lessons and all too soon we found ourselves ready to celebrate another Christmas and this time I confidently knew where to turn to prepare Hamish’s heart for the coming festive season.

Last year, we, once again, excitedly, joined the Superbook First Christmas experience and made advent crafts while we decorated our homes, baked cookies, and got ready to join people from all over South Africa to watch The first Christmas episode at the same time and see how Chris and Joy, together with Gizmo find out the true meaning of Christmas.

Superbook has become an important part of our family’s Christmas traditions.

The first Christmas experience and you are invited

This year Superbook will host a fun and meaningful Christmas experience at the V & A amphitheater on the 3 and 4 December from 11am- 12pm and you are invited to bring your children and experience the magic as they watch the nativity come alive on screen in a fun and relatable way that children can truly grasp.

The show is free and your children will enjoy watching, laughing, dancing, singing, and even getting to meet Gizmo the robot. Hamish and I are both super excited and can’t wait. It promises to be a wonderful experience, great morning out, and a fantastic way for us to start our advent season.

Competition- win a composite photo from Photography by AllyK

We recently had this beautiful composite photo made for Hamish, imagining him in a land of dinosaurs chatting to Dennis the diplodocus.

We had spent the day before taking images, because with social distancing we couldn’t get Ally to take the photo. I told Hamish I wanted to get photos of him pretending he had seen a dinosaur.

After receiving this increadibly special photo, I told Hamish I had seen him dreaming, and that in his dream he was talking to a diplodocus and so I took a photo.

He was delighted. My dino loving boy suddenly had a photo depicting his favourite adventure.

We recently recieved a Barbie Dream Big Board Game.

As a huge fan of Barbie, a mom and an educator I was excited when I sat down with designer Janine Van Schalkwyk, a mom of 3, and listened to her inspirations behind this innovative new board game that is designed to encourage and empower our young girls to “Dream big” .

About the game

This Proudly South African career based board game, developed around the iconic Barbie brand, is designed for girls age 8 to 12 years old to encourage them to know that they can “Be Anthing”, just like Barbie.

To date Barbie, who started her career 60 years ago as a fashion model, has added over 200 careers to her resume. Representing a diverse number of careers from rock star to CEO.

The Barbie Dream Big Board Game encourage young girls to envision themselves in a future career path by emphasizing the brand’s core message that “YOU CAN BE ANYTHING” and equiping them with real – life insights that encourage the discussion of topics such as – individual identity, subject choices,study options, personal talents and business ethics.

What’s in your game

Each board game comprises of :

  • A board game which unfolds and shows a diversity of Barbie faces, hair styles and skin colours.
  • 8 free standing Barbie figurines, printed on styrene. Each figurine depicts Barbie in a different career path.
  • A spinner, that clips together
  • A pink timer
  • 4 sets of cards representing different career paths.

How to play

The game is for 2 to 8 players. Whilst aimed at girls age 8 – 12 , younger girls could play with assistance.

A great family game and a wonderful resource in the modern day classroom.

Each player starts by choosing a figurine and takes a turn to spin the spinner in the centre of the flower on the board game.

The first person to land on pink starts the game.

The game continues clockwise and whatever colour the spinner stops on, that is the colour card you pick up.

The objective of the game, as you move around the board, is to answer the fun yt eeducational and challenging cards that have been divided into topics of :-

  • Question cards – these are aimed at educating by building a child’s general knowledge.
  • Action cards – these cards are interactive and will require your child to draw, or act out a specific scenario. Keep a pencil and paper handy. Your child will need to complete the task before the timer runs out.
  • Problem cards – these cards encourage your child to think about ethical issues they may encounter in a real life work situation.

The cards are colour coded and focus on 4 career paths …

1. Business (teal) – focusing on age appropriate insight on how to build a business and brand.
2. Help and Service (yellow) – focusing on comunity building careers and inspiring girls to give back to their community.
3. STEM (purple) – focusing on exposing girls to a variety of role models in the often under represented career paths of Science, Tehnology, Engineering and Mathematics.
4. Creative (pink) – focusing on the creative opportunities in arts, performance art, fashion, interior design, cooking and baking.

The cards present challenging questions that will encourage your child to find answers, learn more and think outside the box whilst preparing our young girls for the tomorrow of their dreams.
