ADDITIONAL SHOWS ANNOUNCED FOR “THE MAGIC BOX”

“All Disney. One Musical”

Due to popular demand and an overwhelming response Disney’s The Magic Box has extended its run in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. 

The show, featuring an all-South African cast opens at Artscape, Cape Town, on Wednesday, 9 October and now closes on Sunday, 10 November 2024. Thereafter, Disney’s The Magic Box moves to Montecasino’sTeatro, Johannesburg, opening on Friday, 22 November and now extended throughout the festive season to end on Sunday, 5 January 2025.

Shows run weekly from Wednesdays to Sundays with a 3pm show on Thursday, 19 December. Matinee shows at 2pm are scheduled on 24, 26, 31 December 2024 and 02 January 2025. No performances on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Early evening, 5pm shows take place on 26 December 2024 and 02 January 2025.

Further news is that leading SA financial institution, First National Bank (FNB) has now come onboard as a Presenting Partner of the production.

Disney’s The Magic Box is a 90 minute stage musical that immerses the audience in an unprecedented theatrical adventure that combines puppetry, elaborate costumes, and projections in an innovative and large-scale staging.

The show is a sensory experience that pays tribute to the art of animation and invites the audience to reconnect with the legacy of Disney music through the stories, songs, and characters that have accompanied them through the different stages of their lives.

Disney’s songs merge into an iconic original score, and the characters come to life through various theatrical techniques, magnificent choreography, and the voices and performances of a South African cast of 26 top-notch artists.

The cast features some of South Africa’s finest, fresh young talent whose performances are set to enthral audiences as they take patrons on an immersive theatrical sensory experience through the 100 years of Disney. 

The story tells about Mara, played by stage, television and screen actress, Ashley Scott who embarks on a magical journey led by no other than Mickey Mouse, along with his friends Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto, brought to life on the stage in a uniquely and innovative theatrical way.

Fellow leads who play the Disney characters as they come to life through various theatrical techniques are Brett De Groot, Nqobile Hlekwayo, Ghia Hough, Pule Buys, and Tumelo Mogashoa.

The multi-talented ensemble each playing a show character includes Tania Mteto, Tannah Levick, Sunny Yoon, Zoë Gray, Cindy-Ann AbrahamsSiya Makakane, Nicolette Fernandes who is also the show’s dance captain,  Gemma French and Hannah Norcott.  Experienced musical theatre performers Sibusiso Mxosana, Tshepo Ncokoane, Dirk Joubert, Michael Fullard and Emkay Khanyile who returns from playing Mufasa in The Lion King International Tour together with Marco Titus, Che-jean Jupp; Logan Timbre, Austin Tshikosi and Gerard van Rooyen completes the ensemble line-up.

The cast and crew together with local creative specialists Nthabiseng Malaka, working with international designer Sofia Di Nunzio on Costume Design; Musical Director, Dawid Boverhoff and Technical Supervisor Alistair Kilbee will be working with the musical’s international creative team of Thaddeus McWhinnie Phillips (Co-Writer and Director, as well as Set Co-Designer), Lynne Kurdziel Formato (Choreographer), Isaac Saul (Musical Director, Arranger and Orchestrator) and Creative Producer, Felipe Gamba who has led the show’s development. Gamba also co-wrote the book with Phillips. Darren Greeff is the Associate Producer, Resident Director & Choreographer.
