Memories are made camping!
What a fabulous weekend as we tested out our new camping gear at Ou Skip holiday resort in Melkbos.
This was our first camp as a family and I specifically wanted to camp close to home, incase any of us needed anything or the weather turned bad.
My fears were quickly dissolved as we drove into the tranquility that is Ou Skip.
Greeted by friendly security and staff, we were armed with a map, arm bands and a sticker for the car to allow us to come and go off the resort.
All that was left was for us to find our camping site amidst the trees, wild bunnies, geese, chickens and birds.
I was suprised to find the camp buzzing with people and a variety of camping items from tents to caravans. We soon got to work setting up our tent for the evening.
A weekend of adventure
Hamish very quickly found some trees to climb and bushes to explore before venturing to the rivers edge to look for tadpoles.
As soon as his friend arrived, the boys explored on their bikes; discovered the park and spent the majority of the first day in the cool waters of the pool.
It wasn’t long before they had made new friends and the campsite was abuzz with little boys collecting sticks for the fire, playing soccer and chasing the chickens.
For us adults the open air and warm sun were the perfect settings to relax under a shady tree as we got the braai on.
Things I noticed
Some things that really stood out for me were :
How friendly everyone was. I think maybe we all just nicer people out in nature but it was great to see so many smiling faces. Everyone was willing to lend a hand or some advice when it came to pitching our tent or things we may need.
Another thing that stood out for me was how great my wifi reception was. Brent was even able to stream his Liverpool game.
The ablution block was super clean and everyone using it was mindful to keep it that way. It also contained several baths and is painted the most gorgeous pink colour. Toilet paper was supplied at the front office.
Safety.. I won’t lie, safety was my biggest concern and I was impressed to see both a large security and daily police presence in the resort. This definitely had me relaxed.
The birdlife is outstanding and we lost track of the number of birds we saw.
But it was the soft lull of the ocean each evening and in the quiet of the early morning that won my heart over.
