From Smoke to Sizzle, it’s Time to ‘Steak’ Your Claim
Entries now open for Capegate’s annual Braai Challenge, the hottest competition in town this September
It’s going to be smoking hot around the fire come September when the annual CG Braai Challenge gets underway, which in 2024, is set to be bigger, better and tastier than ever. To ‘steak’ a claim to the bragging rights and the goodies worth more than R30 000, entries are now open.
Open fire restaurants are a growing trend around the world at present, but leading the pack are the braai champions in our own backyard, none more so than the contestants who come to Capegate Shopping Centre every September. To be one of the top 10 with a chance to cook-off for a select panel of judges and walk away as the 2024, Capegate Braai Challenge Champion on 14 September, all contestants need to do is submit the recipe of their favourite braai dish.
How it works:
When the entries close at midnight on 31 August, Capegate and its panel of guest judges will select the top 10 recipes that tickle their tastebuds.
These 10 flame-masters then cook off in front of a crowd at Capegate on Saturday 14 September, with first the elimination demonstrating their skills in preparing the ultimate boerewors roll, a staple of most well-dressed braais in South Africa.
Only five will then go through to the semi-finals, which will involve presenting a steak dish to the discerning judges, who will have some specific requirements for the meat, although the trimmings will be up to the contestant.
The final three then set the sizzle and showdown by creating the dish with which they entered, with only one crowned Capegate Braai Challenge champion 2024.
They say that people eat with their eyes as well as their taste buds. Taking this to heart, is well known senior content producer for Woolworths Taste magazine and chef presenter on the Expresso Show, Clement Pedro, who joins the team as a judge this year and who will no doubt be looking for a visual feast as well as flavour.
Capegate’s marketing manager, Zoë Ganz: “The braai is at the heart of our South African culture, and for Capegate, this annual Braai Challenge is as much about the creative cooking genius of our entrants, as it is about the opportunity for us all to take time out from our always-on lives to get around the fire and be together. We can’t wait to welcome everyone.
“Because braaiing is about people, a big shout out to our wonderful partners who help to make this event possible and fun – for the contestants and the spectators – thank you!”
