VYFTIG APOKRIEWE
There is never a better time to be creative. Before you’ve mastered certain lessons, you’re fifty. Life is indifferent to whether you’re still climbing, or whether you believe you’re already standing on the summit of Kilimanjaro.
With VYFTIG APOKRIEWE, NEIL SANDILANDS delivers an album born from exactly such a moment. The project began when fellow musician and producer Theo Crous approached him with a simple proposal: come to the studio and make an album. In a time where singles, playlists, and algorithms dominate the landscape, a full-length album is almost an anachronism. What is consumed today is forgotten tomorrow.
The process was intense and purposeful. “The challenge was simple and ruthless: do I have enough sources of musical inspiration for a considered album? Sink or swim,” says NEIL. “The brief was to, under pressure, create immediately with everything I’ve learned over the past four years or so – not for private satisfaction, but for public offering.”
Over the years, NEIL built a personal archive of ideas, melodies, and lyrics – captured on his phone or in notes. “Sometimes, when I’m driving, a tune comes into my head… I’ll just record it on my phone or write it down in ‘Notes’.”
The ideas, inspiration and influences for the album encapsulates several decades. “Some of the works go as far back as 1994. At the same time, certain tracks emerged spontaneously, like ‘Faustiaanse Brekkie’, which I literally recorded at 04:00 at my kitchen table.”
The recording process required a balance between preparation and spontaneity. “By the time we get to the studio, I have fairly clear ideas… but I usually leave about 20% to 30% of the song unfinished to incorporate new ideas.” The duo worked the old-fashioned way: an analogue mixing desk, real musicians, and songs discovered and born in the moment – a kind of creative emergency birth.
Out of fourteen recordings, nine tracks were selected for the final album. “If a track sounded just too ordinary, I omitted it.”
‘Apokriewe’ refers to content which lies outside the mainstream canon. VYFTIG APOKRIEWE deliberately stands slightly askew from contemporary discourse. It demands attention, reflection, and movement from the listener. The music is familiar enough not to alienate, yet different enough to require deeper engagement.

1) Lonely Boer
A protest against herd mentality. The song uses an unusual meter and explores the double-edged sword of technological “democracy,” where mediocrity is often elevated. It is the shadow of the triumph song – a Midas moment where blessing and downfall coincide.
2) Port St Johns
A drifting, earthy look at attraction and infatuation – not as a moment of glamour, but as a fall. The shadow side of romantic idealisation.
3) Kiewiet Papenfus
Deceptively light. A familiar dance rhythm and simple lyrics are used for satire, parody, and allegory. The song defends the sovereignty of the individual and the inalienable right to expression and speech.
4) Taaibos
Playful, layered, and rich in language. It’s a song about braai – with tjoppies, boerewors, chicken, skilpadjies, pap – the whole gastronomic smorgasbord.
5) Taraboemdery
A reinterpretation of the well-known song, rooted in the stage work of Chris Barnard. What sounds like a love song may carry a more unsettling undertone. Janine Neethling’s accordion reinforces this tension.
6) Spioen in Berlyn
Inspired by the reality of Stasi espionage in 1989 and a personal visit to Germany. Cold militarism collides with nostalgia and longing – between winter in Europe and spring in the Boland.
7) Faustiaanse Brekkie
An intimate, almost liturgical recording, captured at 04:00 at a kitchen table. An apocryphal piece in the purest sense – referential, raw, and deliberately unpolished.
8) Grondonteiening
A political and poetic diptych, inspired by Kubla Khan. Hope and disillusionment share the same melody. Language is used metaphorically to explore the spirit of the times, sovereignty, and human dignity.
9) Sandmatroos
A lullaby. A night blessing. A wish for what is good and true, in a time where such certainties have become rare. It closes the album with a sense of hopeful rest.
VYFTIG APOKRIEWE ultimately becomes more than just an album – it is a snapshot of fifty years of lived experience.
“There’s never a better time to be creative… I just had to do it,” says NEIL. “Some guys climb Kilimanjaro at 50 – I made an album.”
