Visit the Fairy Trees in Noordhoek Common
A hidden fairy wonderland in Cape Town
This weekebd we went looking for the little fairy houses at Noordhoek Common.
I love this outing as it is a truly magical hidden gem tucked away between the old oak trees on the large open green space of the common grounds.
As you approach the fairy trees, it nostalgically feels like stepping straight into an Enid Blython storybook with little doors, windows, and magical creatures waiting for you to explore.
The first time we visited, I didn’t tell Hamish what to expect, and watching the wonder unfold as he discovered these magical little homes was truly something special.
What makes the fairy trees special
These fairy trees are not a formal attraction, which makes them even more magical. They have lovingly been created by those who still believe in the magic of fairies and who want to add a little glimmer into the lives of children.
As you slowly wander through the magnificent shaded oak grove of the commons, you’ll notice tiny details hidden in the trunks and branches of the trees.
Most of the little doors are set low allowing even the youngest child to discover them with more windows and details higher up on the trees.

- Little gardens on the trees
Each tree seems to almost hold its own little secrets. Hamish immediately started to create stories about who the fairies behind each door and honestly, I found myself doing the same.
It’s this imaginative, unstructured play that makes the experience so valuable. There are no rules ….just nature and a sprinkle of magic.
Why this is the perfect outing for families
One of the things I love most about the fairy trees is how effortlessly it combines outdoor play with creativity.
The open space at Noordhoek Common means kids can run freely, explore safely, climb trees or take their bikes , balls and kites to play with.
It’s also a wonderful space for a family picnic after exploring the fairy trees.
Best part, it’s completely free, which is a huge win for families looking for budget-friendly activities in Cape Town.
As parents, we often feel pressure to plan big outings or expensive activities , but places like these fairy trees remind us that magic doesn’t have to be complicated, costly or curated.
Sometimes, all our children really need is a patch of grass, a few trees, and the freedom to imagine.
This is the kind of childhood I want to create.
