I always start by bringing warmth into the areas where my family spends the most time.
Our lounge and bedrooms.
To begin I swap out lighter summer fabrics for:
- Soft throws and blankets On the beds and couches
- Warmer-toned cushions
- and add rugs for added comfort
In our home, adding just a few cozy textures instantly changes the feel of the space. It invites everyone to slow down, snuggle up, and spend more time together.
Lighting also plays a big role. As the days get shorter, softer lighting or lamps can make evenings feel calm and relaxed.

Declutter and reset after summer
Autumn really is the perfect season to do a gentle reset.
After months of Summer’s sunshine, beach days and outdoor living, things can start to feel a little chaotic.
Autumn is the perfect time to :
- Pack away unused summer items like beach and camping gear
- Organise toys and books
- Clear surfaces for a calmer environment
- Sort linen cupboards
- Restock the pantry for the upcoming Winter months soup season
I like to involve Hamish in much of this process. True life skills that teaches responsibility and makes a reset feel less like a chore.

Prepare for cooler weather
Cape Town mornings and evenings can get pretty chilly quite quickly, even if the afternoons are still warm.
This is why I like to spring clean our wardrobes in early Autumn.
When sorting I will …..
- Bring out jackets, jerseys, and blankets
- Check if clothes still fit, especially the kids as they grow so fast!
- Store away any summer clothing we won’t need
- Purchase any warmer clothing we will need
Layering is key during this season, especially for school mornings And so we ensure that there are enough socks, vests, jerseys and jackets to layer in Winter.

Create comforting family routines
As the weather cools, we naturally spend more time indoors and this uis the perfect opportunity to build meaningful and intentional routines in pur homes.
Some of my favourite autumn habits include:
- Warm drinks after school lessons
- Reading together in the evenings
- Movie nights with blankets and popcorn snacks
- Slower, home-cooked meals. Lots of hearty stews and warm thick soups.
These small rituals bring a sense of stability and comfort, especially for children adjusting back into school routines.

Boost immunity and wellness
Autumn also often brings the start of sniffles and seasonal bugs. (As I write this, I’m fighting off a cold that has had me in bed for a few days. )
To fight the flu ferms and support my family’s health during the colder months of the year, I like to :
-
- Keeping nutritious, warm meals on the menu. Often I cook and freeze these so we can quickly heat a meal for lunch or supper.
- I also take the opportunity to add in as many hidden veggies as I can whilst cooking.
- Adding more vitamin C to our fruit bowl.
- Add more smooties to our diet
- Encouraging regular hand washing
- Opening windows during the day for fresh air
- Prioritising sleep
I’ve found that a consistent routine and a cozy, calm home environment go a long way in keeping everyone feeling their best.
Ultimately, preparing your home for autumn isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a space where your family feels safe, warm, and connected.
As the leaves turn and the days grow shorter, our homes become more than just a place we live in. It becomes our refuge.
And honestly, there’s nothing better than ending a busy day wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by the people who matter most.
