A look back at February 2026

Hello March …and a look back at February 

How are we in March already? February  seems to have flown by.

Having said that, this February has also been slower and more intentional.

With our homeschool time growing to meet middle school needs, our learning days are longer and we have had to re-evaluate how and where we spend our time.

I won’t lie, I’m loving our new calmer space, and it’s calling creativity and peacefulness from me that the last few years hustle had quieted.

Here are our highlights from a busy February

Fifa world cup trophy tour

We joined the masses to attend the FIFA World Cup trophy tour at V and A Waterfront on 1 February and all I can say is what an absolutely horrific event!

Brent is a huge Liverpool fan and so attending this was most likely the equivalent to me booking myself tickets to visit the pyramids in Egypt. I don’t understand the attraction but I do understand my husband’s need to be present at such events, so I booked us tickets.

Never…ever…ever…again!

We arrived fifteen minutes before the ticket stated the event would start. At 9.45am Battery Park was already filing up with supporters, and we took our place in the long queues along the canal.

We were quite impressed by how close we were to the front, there were only about 50 or 60 people ahead of us and as the event started at 10am, we wouldn’t be waiting too long.

How wrong we were!

By 11.30 security informed us the trophy hadn’t arrived yet, by 12pm we were moved up to Battery park and spent an hour waiting in the blazing hot sun, watching as celebrities; TV presenters and various members of the media first had elaborate photoshoots, whilst fans were left to die of heat stroke waiting.

By now, it was far too late to leave the queue. Firstly navigating out the crowd would have been a nightmare and so our only alternative was to wait it out.

Once inside, the event was even less alluring. Two inflatable games, and more queues only to be ushered as quickly as possible with a luke warm coke thrust at you,for a two second view of the trophy and a commemorative photo.

As events go ….I was not impressed and ended up sick for the week with heatstroke.

Was it worth it …. a huge resounding NO !

Wessa launches braille signage at Eerstesteen nature reserve

On the 11th if February, I got to do what I love most and head to Eerstesteen nature reserve for Friends of Blaauwberg to capture the unveiling of the new Braille signage in collaboration with Wessa.

A special morning where key role players and sponsors were represented as we learned more about the need for inclusion, braille signage and the impact it will add to everyone being able to learn more and enjoy the natural environment.

Cape Nature kids club cub event

This is one event we look forward to every year.

Hamish has been a member since the club began and we join in as many of the activities and challenges and the annual cub event is a wonderful opportunity for like-minded nature loving kids to get together for a full day of fun and adventure.

This years theme was water.

Groups discussed the importance of water, conducted a household water audit , Completed an experiment by examining water bugs in the river, separated soluable and insoluble materials, made a water filter and learned how to keep water clean.

A fabulous morning where Hamish made several new friends whilst exploring the Assagaaibosch Nature reserve and we as his parents relaxed and enjoyed a calm day in the sun.

Sunflowers at Vergelegen Wine Estate

To end our month of beautiful outings in nature we took a drive to the stunning Vergelegen wine estate to enjoy the sunflower fields and I was not dissapointed.

Large fields of yellow with beaitiful mountain backgrounds ….does the world get any more beautiful?

For only R30 an adult and R10 a child, Vergelegen offers an array of garden experiences.

Not only do they offer the change to experience the sunflower fields and pick your own Sunflowers but you can tour their gardens which include a rose garden, hydrangeas and two old oak trees.

Honestly one of the best outings we have discovered in a long time and the perfect way to end our Summer adventures as we watch Autum start to slowly roll in.

Written in the stars

February was a month of celestial sightings. With a partial eclipse on the 17th and the beautiful alignment of planets on the 28th.

Whilst we joined the SANSA online streaming for the eclipse, we sadly didn’t spot much of the planet alignment due to bad cloud coverage and rainy Cape Town weather.

 

Rugby Fever

In other news, Hamish attended his first club rugby lesson and I’m not going to lie, it was hard to get him off the field and back into the car.

As I pay his monthly subs and order his new kit I’m well aware that I just entered my rugby mom era and that my heart will forever be in a state of shock ….because let’s face it, rugby isn’t the gentlest of sports.

Rugby moms send advise …..everyone else prayers for my sanity.

Homeschool

In our classroom we’ve been super busy.

February saw us celebrating Lent and learn how our friends celebrate Chinese new year, Ramadan and the Martigra.

Lego has officially entered our homeschool chat as we complete daily quick Lego challenges for STEM.

This mom has also had to re-teach herself decimals as we move from fractions and we are busy with our first science project for a science fair.

For world read aloud day, Hamish was encouraged to participate in both English and Afrikaans. His Afrikaans is really improving daily.

We have also seen the switch of reading for school to reading for pleasure and I couldn’t be more excited at raising a bookworm. Currently the Middle school series by James Patterson is a huge hit in our home.

In conclusion it was a great February and I can’t wait to make just as many amazing memories in March.
