Free Holiday Activities for Kids
in
Cape Town
The Winter school holidays in Cape Town don’t have to be expensive. We have so many wonderful options to keep the kids entertained, from lush urban parks to buzzing beachfront promenades.
I’ve compiled a list of our favourite free or low-cost outings perfect for kids aged 4–12.
Many of these options are easy for parents to organise, require minimal planning, and offer enriching experiences for the whole family.
Green Point Urban Park

-
Cost: Free entry
-
Activities : The park has multiple playgrounds which are suitable for toddler and older kids. Lush open lawns allow you to play ball games, fly kites or just have the kids run about. There is a small stream that kids love to splash in and beautiful paths to ride bikes. The biodiversity gardens is always fascinating to walk through, with the opportunity to catch sight of some urban wildlife. You can also enjoy one of the many picnic spots or try out the outdoor gym. For moms, there is a small coffee shop on site and is only a small walk from the promonade.
-
Why it’s great: We love this park and even held Hamishs 8th birthday there. It is safe, gated, educational and fun—perfect for spontaneous family days out.
Sea Point Promenade & Tidal Pools

-
Cost: Free
-
Activities: The promenade is perfect in both Summer and Winter for long walks, cycling, scooting or roller skating along the coast. Kids can enjoy a splash in the tidal pools or visit rock pools. You can also enjoy street performers, explore public art, watch the paragliders land or grab an ice cream. Look out for the kids play park and giant sunglasses to grab a selfie.
-
Why it’s great : Flat paths make supervision easy as you can see the kids even when they are running ahead. There are plenty of cafes nearby and it’s safe.
Company’s Garden, CBD

-
Cost: Free
-
Activities: The company gardens is a huge hit in my home with both Hamish and my granddaughter requesting visits often to feed the squirrels. I love the tree-lined pathways, shaded lawns and bird aviary. You can purchase seeds and peanuts from local vendors or pack bird seed for an interactive experience. There is a local coffee shop on site and you are right near the Iziko South African Museum, Planeterium and National Art Gallery.
-
Why it’s great: You can feed the friendly squirrels and birds or picnic in the historic surroundings and calm atmosphere safely.
Blue Train Park, Mouille Point

-
Cost: Free entry to park; mini-train R45 ride
-
Activities: The Iconic blue train engine has played such a huge role in Hamishs childhood and we love the new revamp. There is a fun playground area with slides and climbing frames for the kids to enjoy and large open spaces to run. Moms can enjoy the sweeping mountain-to-sea views.
-
Why its great: The blue train alone is a big excitement for younger kids and it’s still the best view of the ocean.
Arderne Gardens, Claremont

- Cost : Free
-
Activities: We visited this historic arboretum with giant trees, crystal ponds, lush lawns and perfect shady nooks, for the first time this year and I fell in love. I can’t believe we have lived in Cape Town for so long and only just discovered this hidden gem now. It’s truly a beautiful space for a picnic, nature walk or just to let the kids run free.

Why it’s great: Ideal place for a nature scavenger hunt or storytelling picnic. There are security at the gate.
Newlands Forest Trails

-
Why it’s great : There are great picnic spots and mild hikes which are perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy nature, get outdoors but may not be the most fit hiker.
Battery Park & Urban Play at V&A Waterfront

-

-
Activitues: Raising a boy means that we spend quite a bit of time at Battery park, armed with our scooters and skateboards. The park offers a fantastic skatepark, basketball court, BMX facilities and playgrounds. The kids will want to keep coming back.
-
Why it’s great: This park beautifully combines active play with casual sightseeing along the canals.
As you can see Cape Town is full of free or nearly free wonders that will ignite your child’s curiosity and joy without breaking the bank.
So, whether you enjoying a nature walk, urban exploration, or a light thrill, this list of outings offer parents and kids shared memories and enriching experiences for a fraction of the cost with just a little planning from mom or dad.
Planning Tips for Parents

-
Bring the essentials: I never leave home without a backpack of snacks, water, sunscreen, hats, and an extra layer of clothing for cooler mornings or evenings.
-
Pack light entertainment: If you are visiting an outdoor area pack in the frisbee, ball, sketchbook, binoculars, or other entertainment that is easy to carry and will enhance outings.
-
Combine outings with routines: A morning trip followed by a home lunch helps stretch your day, without overspending. We often enjoy an early morning activity, with a picnic lunch at a park.
-
Stick to free options, mix one low-cost treat: The holidays are long and can work out quite costly, especially if you are trying to entertain more than one child. If you planned a hike with a picnic for one day , you could then add a visit to a paid experience the next, helping to keep costs low.
-
Check seasonal times: Some areas are seasonal : e.g., tidal pools in summer, times for garden visits may be later in Winter, etc
-
Engage kids with education: Children learn best through play and often the best outing has both allowed them to have fun as well as taught them something new. Allow your child to lead the outing. Let them choose a trail to bird-watch or feed squirrels. Not only will they feel more involved and included but it will make those core memories much more It’s more memorable and enriching.
However you spend the holidays and whatever you choose to joy, always make sure you are enjoying the outing as much as the kids are.
