How we accidentally got pet mice

How we accidentally got pet miceĀ

As nature lovers, we love all animals. However, I really don’t want all animals living in my home.

One of the pets we’ve successfully avoided for the last 28 years are mice!

Why?

Well, the tale starts of innocently, when I bought my eldest daughter, then a toddler, a little white mouse as a pet. I was so excited for her to have her very own first pet and 3 minutes into the introduction she had sadly manged to cuddle it to death.

I rushed out and replaced that mouse 3 times before settling for a cat rather. I also swore I would never let any of my kids ever get mice again.

And this began many years of pets but never any mice …

Until

Today, when my son Shaun came home with 3 mice and a cage, intending to feed them to his older brothers ball python.

I naturally threw myself into a tearful protest, rivaling any good PETA groups efforts and somehow managed to negotiate buying the mice. ( Honestly WTAF!)

With tears still screaming down my eyes at the thought of those cute little critters becoming breakfast for venom the snake, I had food, water and sawdust in their cage before I could say rambling rodents.

And now I’m currently looking at an estatic Hamish watching his new pets, named:- Stuart; Peanut and Shadow, whilst he completes his maths.

Needless to say my two cats are eyeing the mice out with lunch plans on their mind and the mice seem determined to taunt the cats through the glass.

As I take a sip on my coffee, wondering how I’m going to explain this to my husband, I’m also wondering how exactly I got myself into this mess .
