The Greenpeace ship, Rainbow warrior, docked in Cape Town
Last weekend we had the privilege of visiting one of the world’s most iconic ships ….The Rainbow Warrior, who docked in Cape Town to adress African Fossil Fuel Expansion.

We had booked our tickets online and arrived at Jetty 2 to an enthusiastic group of people awaiting their chance to view the ship, learn more about the Greenpeace organisation and lend their support.
The air was full of excitement as the small crowd of ship crew checked our tickets, welcomed us and gave us our visitors bands made from recycled fabric.
Eagerly we passed the gates and headed towards the small building where we were greeted and encouraged to enjoy the wide host of activities set out for visitors to enjoy before their tour of the ship.
Fun for everyone
The first thing that caught my eye was a fabric photo backdrop that was perfect for a selfie.
We then headed to the main table where petitions were being signed, more information was given about Greenpeace and their campaigns and we found this cute oil spill can.
There were special tables set up for kids ( and their adults) to colour in beautifully drawn images from around Cape Town.

Popcorn and slushies were offered free and were totally appreciated in Cape Town’s summer weather.
But it was the photobooth that impressed me the most. A simple yet effectively amazing idea where an artist sits behind a decorated cardboard box screen and draws your photo.
They had made some paper coins and Hamish was encourage to pop a coin in to get the photo booth started.
The entire process didn’t take long and before we knew it we had a lovely caricature drawn of our family, delivered out the exit slot.
What stood out from the exhibits, atmosphere and ambiance was not only how serious the campaigns are, but also how each activity was set out to be something memorable, enjoyable and to creatively and effectively reach the full impact of each family member.
The ship
Next it was time to join the crowd to board the ship. We were lead outside and groups of 20 people at a time were taken the ship where they enjoyed a tour and met the crew.
The wait was long in the heat and we turned back from the tour on board as we were still quite far back with about 3 riws of people ahead of us, and with my daughter in hospital with my new grandson we sadly didn’t have the time to wait a few hours.
I’m sorry to have missed the tour but we did get to view this iconic ship up close and learn more about the work she does.

The Rainbow warrior is the flagship vessel for Greenpeace and has been operational since 2011, serving as a floating witness against threats like Fossil fuels, over fishing, climate change, pollution and nuclear protests.
Designed specifically for environmental activism, she features sustainable materials and advanced technology. Her distinctive A frame masts are used for sailing and she boasts a helicopter deck and efficient engines.
Her main purpose is to encourage peaceful direct action for environmental activism, to conduct research and expose environmental issues.
