Jar of Hope
Feed a family of 4 with a little kindness
Every day there are a large number of people who struggle to put food on the table for themselves and their families.
During Winter, even a simple pot of hot soup, is not within their means.
Knowing this many organizations collect Jars of Hope throughout the year and distribute them to the elderly, the vulnerable, soup kitchens or the homeless.
What is a jar of Hope?
A jar of hope is a glass jar that has been filled with ingredients to make a meal.
These jars of hope first circulated at the beginning of the covid outbreak and many of you may be familiar with them.
They contain:
- soup mix
- Rice
- Lentils
- Stock cube
- Soup powder
The ingredients within cook in one pot to make a nutritious, warm meal that is enough to feed a family of four.
How to make a Jar of Hope
This recipe is from Health, Heart and Home and is the recipe I’ve been using to make my own Jars of Hope.

You will need for each jar to feed 4 people:
- Coffee jar
- 1/2 cup of rice
- 1/2 cup of soup mix
- 1/2 cup of lentils
- Stock cube
- 1 pkt soup powder
Method
In a clean glass jar, I like to use the Nescafe Jars as the ingredients fit well, layer your dry ingredients.
On the top of the jar, add the soup powder and the Stock cube before sealing the jar.
Helpful tip
On to the jar place a sticker or give instructions to mix with 2 and half litres of boiling water.
I designed a tag that you can either print onto card stock and glue or tie to the jar, or print to sticker sheets to apply.
Where to distribute your Jars of Hope
If you, like us, make these jars up monthly and want to distribute them for use after making up a collection of several bottles but don’t know where to deliver them, here is a list of organisations that you could approach to fobate them to.
- Churches
- Shelters
- Scouting groups
- Community organisations
- Food kitchens or feeding schemes
- Old age homes
- Children’s homes
- NGO organisations
You can also make use of your local community Facebook groups and reach out to see if there is an organisation in your area needing any.
There are often many initiatives, especially during Winter and Mandela day that host special collection dates in hopes to share a little kindness with those who are vulnerable or in need.
Any idea where I could drop off a few Jars I made in Durbanville or surrounding areas?
hi, I’m not sure of drop-off sites but I’m sure a local church could assist.
