Cape Town’s most imaginative playground returns as PLAYTOPIA, Africa’s flagship festival of indie games and immersive arts, celebrates its 5th anniversary edition this December. This year, the festival expands its universe in every possible direction – more games, more creators, more international partnerships, and a brand-new artistic vision that transforms the event into an all-encompassing world of wonder.
Festival-goers will step into a reimagined ARCADIA, a newly fabricated fantasy library dreamt up by the festival’s decor lead Natasha Davidson (Africa Burn, Bazique). Expect towering books, glowing potions, crystal curiosities and mysterious portholes that blur the lines between art installation and storybook realm. ARCADIA acts as the beating heart of the festival: An environment designed not merely to host games, but to transport audiences into the worlds those games evoke.
Inside this transformed space, visitors will discover over 100 games from all corners of the globe, including standout selections from PLAYTOPIA’s international partners: BitSummit (Japan), BCN Games Fest (Spain), A.Maze (Germany) and Freeplay (Australia).
A Major Milestone for SA Gaming: Exclusive New Levels of ‘Shroom and Gloom’!
A headline moment for 2025 is the public premiere of never-before-seen levels of ‘Shroom and Gloom’, the wildly acclaimed title from local studio Team Lazerbeam, published by powerhouse label Devolver Digital. PLAYTOPIA attendees will be the first in the world to enter these new chapters of the game, long before its global launch in 2026.
To celebrate the milestone, the festival unveils a massive Shroom cave and tunnel installation, plunging visitors into the strange, charming 3D underworld that has earned the game international hype.

For the first time, PLAYTOPIA’s celebrated art installations will be envisioned and produced by The Art Massive, a newly formed collective of interactive artists, technologists, and worldbuilders united by the festival’s director and long-time PLAYTOPIA collaborators. Over the past months, The Art Massive has been hosting jams, meetups and shared-build sessions, cultivating a grassroots creative community whose collective imagination will shape this year’s installations. The result: multi-sensory artworks that merge play, sculpture, code, sound, and performance into experiences unique to PLAYTOPIA.
As PLAYTOPIA steps into its fifth year, it continues to solidify South Africa’s position as a rising force within the international indie gaming scene. Over time, the festival has become a key meeting point for developers, artists, curators, and publishers searching for fresh African perspectives and unexpected creative approaches.
“We’re incredibly excited to be hosting the Shroom n Gloom premier alongside Devolver Digital, a first of its kind in South Africa. We will also be debuting ARCADIA, together with the Afrika Burn and Bazique Decor teams, we have designed a large format set that will house the main arcade so people can play the games inside a truly extraordinary fantastical environment inspired by retro fantasy films we all have grown up to. PS. There will be a giant spider you can play with!” – Dominique Gawlowski, Playtopia Festival Director.
