Win Tickets to experience The Waterfront Duck : Africa’s first amphibious bus tour

This weekend, we headed to the Silo district at the V and A Waterfront to experience our very first amphibious bus tour with The Waterfront Duck co

About The Waterfront Duck

Designed to allow you the experience of both a land and water tour, the Waterfront Duck is a 36 seater amphibious vehicle that was build to modern safety standards and imported from overseas.

Underneath her unique appearance, Bella, the Waterfront Duck is a Seahorse MKIII, and complies to all safety standards required by the NRCS ( National  Regulator for Compulsory Standards) as well as road and SAMSA ( South African Maritime Safety Authority) .

She has 9 watertight compartments, automatic bilge pumps , ABS brakes and the bus carries life jackets, fire extinguishers and a bucket of sand in case of any emergency.

Before entering the waters, Dan, your tour con-duck-tor will give you a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket.

All children are required to wear their life jackets ….Kids also get the cutest captains hat to wear for the duration of the trip.

Your captain is equally as qualified to ensure you are always safe along your journey. Quack-tain Ron, as he is fondly known, is dual qualified for both land and water carriage.

Why is it called a Duck?

In World War II, The General Motor Corporation, built similar vehicles called DUKW, and the troops were quick to start calling them ” ducks”. This name stuck.

After the war, several of these vehicles were adapted for civilian and tourism use.

Over time, these original vehicles are being replaced with newer models that meet the modern safety requirements.

The tour

With an engaging, fun land and water tour, you’ll learn more about Cape Towns scenic Waterfront area before sailing into the waters and exploring the harbour.

Con-duck-tor Dan, your knowledgeable guide, will entertain you with stories of local history, and the ecology of the Cape.

You will be entertained for the full duration of your trip with fun jokes, interesting facts, short tales and learning the ” Quack Attack”

I loved the personal and engaging aspect to this tour, no ear phone voices talking me through, but rather the opportunity to ask questions, be present and enjoy a laugh with those around us.

I also loved that the humour, energy and enthusiasm from con-duck-tor Dan, kept the kids enthralled and Hamish walked away having learnt several new bits of history.

The route starts on land as you depart the Silo Precinct and head towards the Atlantic seaboard and city with a fresh perspective of Cape Town’s rich history.

You will then return to the Waterfront and enter the water at the V and A Marina, via a slipway. Here you pass the luxury boats, visit the seal platform behind the Two Oceans Aquarium and head through the Alfred and Victoris basins under both the Bascule and the Swing bridge.

The Duck doesn’t leave the harbour area, however there are several opportunities to soak in the beautiful scenery, gorgeous architecture and seals, as they frolic in the waters, before heading back on route to where you began your tour.
