Winter laundry
Winter laundry will be the death of me I’m sure!
Sure enough the volcano of laundry seems to mysteriously grow through overnight and in Summer, when we don’t have wet and rainy days, we have outside lines to help dry this pretty quickly.
However
In Winter, I dry our items indoors and it takes days to dry.
No, I don’t own a Tumble dryer as honestly they take way to much electricity and so we stumble through the laundry matrix old school.
Here’s a few of my laundry tips to keeping sane during Winter.
Wash daily– As a large household, we thankfully have enough washing to wash daily. This helps to keep the growing loads to a minimum.
Invest in indoor washing hangers- I have 2 steel dryers in my kitchen that I hang clothing on. We also use smaller plastic peg hangers in the bathrooms for underwater and when my loads are big, I’ll use coat hangers and our shower rail to hang items on to dry. This is so easy to pack away when dry.
Wash linen every two weeks – I normally wash our linen every week but in Winter, I only wash every two weeks. There are obvious exceptions, for example is a blanket or duvette is dirty. I do however change the pillow slip and sheet every week. We normally wait for the occasional hot day to wash blankets and duvets. I also love to freshen the linen weekly with a bit of baby powder dusted into it.
Wash underwater in the shower – This saves time and space in the washer snd ensures that if it rains for days and we can’t wash, everyone still has clean underware.
Fabric softner- In winter its advised to wash your clothing on a cold, gentle cycle with a fabric softner, to reduce a static cling and to keep it smelling fresh and not musty.
Extra spin cycle – For heavier items, like coats, blankets, etc you could give the load an extra spin to remove excess water.
Ventilation– Always make sure wherever you are drying your clothing that there is good ventilation. This will prevent mildew and musky odours.
Reuse – Items like jeans , jerseys and jackets can go through a few wears begore washing. Keep them fresh by waiting them after use, and spraying some sort of freshener onto them.
