Join the Great Southern Bioblitz challenge

Residents of Cape Town are invited to the  City’s nature reserves next weekend to participate in this years Great Southern Bioblitz challenge.

What is the Great Southern Bioblitz challenge?

Cape Town is participating in this year’s Great Southern Bioblitz challenge alongside other cities in the southern hemisphere in an effort to record the local diversity of plant and animal life.

The challenge takes place annually during springtime in the southern hemisphere, and is aimed at recording the vast biodiversity of our local environment.

Using the same model as the City Nature Challenge, cities in the southern hemisphere all compete against each other to see who can record the widest range of plant and animal species during the course of the challenge, which runs from 24 November to 27 November 2023.

Who can join the challenge ?

Everyone is encouraged to join. The Great Southern Bioblitz is a great opportunity for residents to showcase our astonishing natural heritage.

How to join

The City will be offering free entry to the City’s nature reserves from 24 November to 27 November 2023 for people who are participating in the event.

To join, simply sign up and enter your plant and animal sightings on the iNaturalist app or website, and they will automatically be included in the challenge.

To see how Cape Town is doing, visit Cape Town’s project page on the iNaturalist website.
