Winter in Cape Town means warm jackets, hot chocolate and colder weather.
So, we tend to find more things to do to keep Hamish busy or entertained that are indoors, only venturing out in the sunshine.
Over the years we’ve explored and visited numerous child friendly places in Cape Town and I often find we go back to some a little more often than others.
Here is a list of things that we enjoy doing in winter :
📎 Two Oceans aquarium
There is always something new to discover at the Two Oceans Aquarium. From viewing the exhibits, watching the penguins or rays being fed, digging up a Coelacanth, touching the creatures in the touch pool, discovering the sea creatures under the microscope, watching a puppet show or enjoying the crafts in the children’s play area. The Two Oceans Aquarium is my first choice to visit and the reason we bought membership tickets
📎 Cape Town Science center
A great space for the kids to learn about the wonders of science and how it impacts our every day life. Catch a live show, join a holiday program or wonder around and enjoy the hands on exhibits. Another place we visit often, as there is always something new to discover.
📎 Playdate Superpark
The best place for kids to run off that energy. With a dedicated toddler section and a over head maze and obstacle course your kids will never tire of this superpark. I often go and get some work done, grab us some lunch and Hamish will play. What I love is how attentive and hands on the staff are.
📎 Spur steak ranches lunches
Hamish gives Spur a 100% and he loves being treated to an afternoon at Spur. However we have discovered that the best 3 Spurs in our opinion ( graded on service, food quality and play areas) are Cavendish Square, Sea side villiage in Blouberg and V & A Waterfront.
📎 museums
You can’t go wrong with a museum visit, and Cape Town leaves you spoilt for choices on which museums to visit.
Some of the best ones for children are:
🫧Cape Town museums of childhood
🫧Toy museum in Hout Bay
🫧Air Force Museum in YsterfonteinÂ
🫧Natural history museum
📎library visits
Joining your local library is free and makes for a wonderful outing. Your library may also run story hours, special events and holiday clubs.
📎 Arts and crafts workshops
Some of the ones we enjoy are:
🫧 The clay cafe
🫧artjamming_sa
📎Planeterium
We love the planetarium as much as we do the museums and they run special children shows.
What are your favorite indoor activities to keep the kids busy during the cooler months?
