Take a ride on the Hamleys Train

There something magical about trains. Children and adults alike are drawn to them with childhood innocence and a dash of curiosity.

I like trains. I like their rhythm, and I like the freedom of being suspended between two places, all anxieties of purpose taken care of: for this moment I know where I am going.

So, for us as a family, if there is a train we will hop on board and enjoy the ride.

Hamleys Train

One of our favourite mini trains has to be the Hamleys Train at V and A Waterfront.

It could be that it’s magic is just a little more magical connected to the giant Hamleys man and is usually accompanied by a prior visit to the Hamleys toy store.

About the ride

The Hamleys Train runs without tracks and will wind its way around the Waterfront following a man leading the way with his red flag, ensuring no-one is in the way.

The route may vary, as the Waterfront is currently undergoing some renovation.

The ride costs R25 each and lasts about 10 minutes.

Times vary and it is best to ask in-store what times the train is running.

Children and adults alike are both seated into the carriages after presenting their train tickets and locked in, so your children are quite safe if they are travelling in a carriage separate to you.

I would however recommend no child under 6 travel alone as they could still fall if they lean out too far, and whilst the Train doesn’t go fast they could still get hurt.

A carriage can easily hold 2 adults and 2 small children.

How to get a free Hamleys Train ride

Last year Hamleys introduced a kids club and part of that was offering your child a free train ride a month.

To redeem take your child’s club card ( or sign up instore) and present it to redeem your free ride.
