The Winelands Light Railway

On Saturday we visited The Winelands light railway in Stellenbosch and I was absolutely blown away with this hidden gem.

What I thought would just be a fun ride on a mini steam train turned out to be a day full of fun and adventure.

In truth I will most likely need a few posts to share just how much there is for families to do here and if you follow us on Facebook you would have noticed that I divided this review into a few parts there to truly try and show you just why this is the best way to spend a weekend.

So, let’s start with the trains…….

Trains

Beautifully crafted steam and electric trains run on a mini track across bridges, through floral pathways and under tunnels to delight young and old passengers.

With stunning views of the lush open fields, many trees and beautiful flowers you can’t help looking for the fun animal statues in the bushes and among the trees. Our favourite was the crocodile with a bird in his mouth by the pond.

I absolutely loved the miniature steam train and declared it my favourite with it’s little chimney sending up puffs of smoke and the chime of its bell sounding out into the silence.

I was instantly transported to the stories of my own childhood, of families traveling by train and the little track ( which isn’t actually that little) reminded me of Hamish’s Thomas the tank engine trainset.

Hamish loved the electric engine as she tugged along over the bridges and through the tunnel.

Along our journey we also had the privilege of seeing the numerous engines waiting at the shed.

This along with the many small details like a conductor at the platform sending you off with a whistle, the bridges with names, the signs and lights around the track , transport you back to those excited days of your youth knowing you were about to experience something magical.

There really is so much to do here and I caught myself complimenting the venue from the minute we arrived.

I would put aside a full day for this experience and take your time to truly step out of your busy schedule and enjoy the trains, nature and some good old fashioned family fun.

Things you can enjoy include :

Locomotives: Scenic 7-minute rides running over a bridge and through a tunnel via custom local steam and electric engines. Note that although the electric trains run all day, the steam engines only run during certain hours, so enquire as you book in so as not to miss a ride.

Park Activities:  There really is a wide assortment of fun activities to choose from. Families can enjoy the Jungle gym, sandpit, obstacle course, jukskei, swingball, kids bike track, and a variety of ball games available for use.

Museum: There is a vintage tractor, car and miniature train museum to admire.

Workshop tour : The workshop tour was the just as exciting as getting to ride on the steam train. Tours operate twice a day and are free with your ticket.

Here you get a behind the scenes look at the model trains, how they are made and ask all those questions.

For us it was fantastic to see the trains through the passion amd dedication of those who truly love them.

Note: The Tours are not designed for small children and I’d recommend kids age 10+ attend.

Cafe : An onsite Cafe offers light meals, snacks and refreshments with a shaded area to enjoy your meal. There are children’s soft play, games and toys for little ones to use.

Picnics: Shaded lawns welcome visitors to bring their own picnic baskets (note: alcohol is not permitted).

Pet Friendly: Dogs on leashes are welcome and ride the trains for free. There is a dedicated dog park to walk your pets.

Farm animals: Friendly goats and ducks are on premis to admire.

Exclusive Experience: The Winelands Light Railway also offers a private 3-to-4-hour hands-on Steam Driver Experience when the park is closed to the public.
