Visit Ysterplaat Airforce Base this museum day

This International Museum Day, 18 May 2024, Ysterplaat Air Force Base, invite you to bring the family and celebrate the day with them.

 

This fantastic event is hosted by the Friends of the SAAF Museum. Friends of the SAAF Museum are made up of volunteers and they hope to highlight their “hidden gem” – the SAAF Aviation museum.

About the SAAF Aviation Museum

The SAAF Aviation museumin Ysterplast, is the largest military Aviation in South Africa. It houses an interesting collection of varied exhibits covering the full period of the SAAF’s existence.

On site you will also find a library and small gift shop.

The aircraft on display are housed on the base and open to tours on a Saturday.

What to expect on the day

Although there will be no air show, the museum will be having two Shackelton Ground Runs on the day, at 10am and 1 pm respectively.

All museum aircraft will be moved outside the hangar to be displayed and you will be able to get up close and investigate all the aircraft, meet the passionate and knowledgeable members of the museum and get to feel what it is like to be pilot or a crew member.

There will also be classic cars and bikes on show.

For the kids, once they have seen all the aircraft and cars, they can enjoy the play area with Jumping Castles, face painting, tattoos and much more.

Food and drink

There will be a variety of food vendors on the day including awesome coffee, famous German boerewors rolls and plenty of snacks and sweets.

For the thirsty  you can grab cooldrinks, juices and water on sale. For those who prefer a cold beer or glass of wine,The Shackleton Brewery company will be there with plenty “On Tap” beer and “Stettyn Family Vineyards” will be there in full force to let you sample their award winning wines.

Good to know

DATE: SATURDAY 18TH MAY 2024.

VENUE: YSTERPLAAT AIR FORCE BASE. CAPE TOWN.

TIMES: 8am till 3pm.

Parking – a parking attendant will greet you and show you where to park.

Entry Free – there is an entry fee of R50 per person

Please arrive an hour before the Shackleton ground run you want to attend.

Card facilities are avaliable.

Medics will be on scence should an accident occur and there will be a designated Lost Kids area, should your children run off.
